Clash Royale: If a test run becomes box office hit

When giants, witches, goblins, and wizards compete with each other on the smartphone, it can be assumed that the Supercell company had his fingers in the game. Four years after the release of Clash of Clans, the Finnish developers are still gaining around 1.5 million Dollar a day with in-app sales of the "Free to Play" title. No wonder the success story recently received a new edition.

Clash Royale is the name of the Rising Star on the list of games in Appstore and on Google Play: "Clash Royale" is a mixture of real-time-strategy and card game is the describtion that is the most suitable for the Application. The online players compete against each other in several duels. Their goal: To destroy the three enemy towers in an arena while defending their own. In the center stands the all-important "Kings Tower". If it is destroyed, the attacker has won. The two outer units serve to defend the opposing troops.

But how can one explain the fascination that moves the millions of players to plunge into the virtual world, adorned with medieval fabulous beings nearly every day? Since its release in the first quarter of 2016 the game has already over 50 million downloads. Ascending trend!

Particularly innovative is the fact that the game, as mentioned at the outset, is a mixture of strategy and card games, in which the players fight against each other in real time and have the possibility to directly react on whatever the opponent does. With each victory the player receives coins with which he can develop already collected cards to gain a stronger form of the card. In addition there is the possibility, depending on the number of won cups, to climb into different arenas, which each are equipped with specific cards the player can only find there. This way a long-term fun is generated because their is no actual end a player could ever reach.

Eight individually selected cards can be taken by the player into the battle. There are troop, spell, and building cards: As it is often the case, a mix of the three different types is a good way to ensure a good balance between offensive and defensive tasks and gain stability. The rarity of the cards varies depending on thir strength and is divided according to "normal" rare " " epic " and" legendary ". With a bit of gameplay, however, it should quickly become clear that a good mix is also useful here, since rarer cards require more elixir to be played than the others do, what can lead to the problem that the player is not able to react quickly enough to the opponents move without enough normal cards. In addition, the idea of the game is based on the stone-paper-scissors-principle: While a giant can be easily forced to a knee by a scalet arm, it is unaffected by an arrow hail that can not even touch the giant. This circuit is transferable to all of the over 70 cards.

Quo Vadis Supercell?

The great success of Pokemon Go in the summer of this year was not missed by the successful developer team. For the first time since Clash of Clans conquered the market, the game was for a short time displaced from the number one of the highest-selling games in the Appstore. Today, Clash Royale has been able to regain this pole position, but one thing is sure already: the reaction is not likely to be long in coming and so "Clash Go" - the Augmented Reality version of the game - is going to be launched in the European market in the beginning of 2017. In retrospect, it can be surmised that Supercell has sent the game Clash Royale just as a test version of their big project of 2017 into the race, which is now much more successful than initially expected: the game has even overtaken his big brother. In a few months, the question will be clarified as the developers are able to transfer theii ideas into reality: the fabulous creatures will then appear on the display in front of the players own feet and compete against each other: One may be curious about the implementation of the idea!
